Bipolar disorder is a difficult mental disorder to deal with. The symptom of bipolar disorder is varied due to the fact that there are so many types of bipolar disorder. There are two main types of bipolar disorder: bipolar I and bipolar II.

The symptom of bipolar disorder includes a variety of mood episodes. The first of these is called mania. Mania is a major mood episode characterized by several distinct behaviors. For a manic episode, a person must demonstrate three of the following conditions, four if the mood is irritable. Distractibility, indulgent activities, grandiosity, flighted ideas, activity increase, sleep disturbances, and talkativeness. A simple way of remembering these symptoms is by using the acronym DIGFAST. The symptom of bipolar disorder on the manic side is generally strong, hard-to-miss behaviors.

Depression is also a symptom of bipolar disorder. The name bipolar indicates to sides, or poles. This means that those suffering from the disorder can oscillate back and forth between manic and depressive episodes. To most, a manic episode will appear as a surge of almost unlimited energy.  A depressive episode is quite the opposite. Usually, this symptom of bipolar disorder involves a loss of energy, either increased or decreased sleep, weight loss, sadness, thoughts of suicide, and guilt.

A mixed episode is simply a symptom of bipolar disorder that involves both manic and depressive episodes. This form of bipolar is extremely difficult to deal with since the symptoms are so varied and can switch back and forth very rapidly.
