Bipolar disorder is a serious condition characterized by recurrent episodes of mania and depression, placing the sufferer on an emotional roller-coaster.

Bipolar chat, akin to traditional chat in an online environment, provides much needed support when the going gets tough for bipolar disorder sufferers. They can get in touch with others affected by the same condition, express and find support, and share their experiences. It also allows for information exchange, especially since chat allows for interactive real time discussions.

Bipolar chat is also a very good relational tool, for family and especially parents of children diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Bipolar chat takes away all the physical barriers of communication, as people the world over can meet in the cyber universe and find the support or answers they are looking for.

Bipolar chat is usually held by volunteers in online community settings. Hosts are usually themselves sufferers of bipolar disorder, and thus offer relevant help and support to others with the same condition.

Bipolar chat can take place in peer-to-peer settings or in common community rooms. Anyone can log in on a 24/7 basis. Support rooms are there to assist anyone in need. Lounge rooms are more informal in nature, usually a relaxing place where sufferers of bipolar disorder can get together and talk of every topic under the sun, from politics, to sports, to even their everyday life and concerns.  Special chats are also scheduled in advance, where specific issues are discussed, or when professionals of the psychiatric world attend to respond to question and answer sessions.

Bipolar chat is most commonly found on the Mirc network, where a channel has been especially set up for it. Many websites catering to bipolar disorder also host chat rooms.

However, it has to be remembered that bipolar chat cannot replace a therapist or doctor where treatment is concerned. The chat is mostly a place for support and to reach out to others, thus decreasing the feeling of alienation those people might experience due to their condition. Also, since suicide is prevalent among bipolar disorder sufferers, it has to be noted that bipolar chat hosts are not trained suicide prevention counselors. Under any circumstance, if suicidal tendencies are noted among chatters, they are promptly encouraged to seek relevant support.
